Germany's Anke Huber upset world number eight Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario in straight sets early this morning to win through to the women's semi-finals.

Huber, seeded 10, played dogged tennis and seized on an uncharacteristic string of unforced errors from Sanchez-Vicario to beat the Spaniard 7-6 7-5. Huber played solidly, matching Sanchez-Vicario from the baseline and flicking some great winners past the seventh seed. But a lot of her points came from Sanchez Vicario's own racquet.

When the Spaniard's shots were not hitting the net, they were flying over the baseline, especially on the big points. Of nine break points, Sanchez-Vicario converted only two.

Huber meets the winner of the quarter-final between defending champion Martina Hingis, the world number one, and France's fifth seed, Mary Pierce, who won the Open in 1995. Huber has not made the semi-finals of a grand slam tournament since she was a finalist at Melbourne Park two years ago.
