League of Ireland Premier Division/ Waterford Utd 0 Derry City 1:A vintage Peter Hutton goal on 75 minutes earned Derry all three points at the RSC last night and extended Waterford's losing streak to five games.

Ruaidhri Higgins provided the cross from the left wing and the Blues defence, having defended valiantly all night, for once failed to clear the danger.

Kevin McHugh almost put Derry in front in the 62nd minute when he spotted Dean Delaney off his line. The substitute's lob was inch-perfect but the goalkeeper back-tracked furiously to tip the ball out from under the bar, injuring his back in the process.

Waterford will be disappointed not to have taken a point, at least, from a game they dominated for long periods, especially the first 45 minutes.

Paul McCarthy and Vinnie Sullivan both had chances before a free-kick by Alan Reynolds was only partially cleared by Sean Hargan and Pat Jennings, back between the posts for Derry in place of Ola Tidman, had to dive full-length to turn a rasping, low shot by Sullivan around the post for a corner. Then, Reynolds shaved the outside of the upright with a drilled shot.

Hutton's goal was a welcome relief for Derry, beaten in their previous three league games.
