Illustrious Miss holds attraction

Attraction goes in search of a slice of history in tomorrow's Boylesports Irish 1,000 Guineas and it will do her no harm at all if she finds some more stamina along the way.

No winner of the Newmarket 1,000 Guineas has ever come on to the Curragh to win the Irish version but if Attraction can do it in the style she showed three weeks ago then she really will deserve a place in the record books.

Despite "good to firm" going the Curragh is still more likely to find out any stamina issues than the Rowley mile and a slight question mark must still surround Attraction on that score.

Given an uncontested lead the brilliantly speedy filly dominated throughout at Newmarket to hold on by a fast-diminishing half length from the Oaks favourite Sundrop.

Tomorrow's opposition are unlikely to allow Attraction the same privilege and on this track front-running is an extremely difficult task.

Against that, however, is a raw talent that sees Attraction unbeaten in six starts and the Mark Johnston team are hardly hand-cuffed to forcing tactics.

"I would hope she has come on a good bit from Newmarket and there is every reason to expect she would since it was her first run after a lay-off," Johnston said yesterday.

"You are never comfortable at this level but we're hopeful. We don't have tactics for the race. We don't set out to make it and we don't know how fast the others will go," he added.

The favourite is one of five cross-channel raiders, a figure matched by the Aidan O'Brien team alone. Jamie Spencer has picked Last Love from the Ballydoyle quintet as O'Brien tries for a fourth victory in the race.

The best of the home team may, however, turn out to be Alexander Goldrun who overcame a slow start and trouble in running to win the Leopardstown trial from Misty Heights.

Attraction is the obvious headline act but it would be unwise to ignore the other unbeaten €40,000 supplementary entry.

The beautifully-bred Illustrious Miss was a Group Three winner on her second start and is open to any amount of improvement. Kieren Fallon travels for the ride and the David Loder filly could be an each-way option.

Such options don't look likely in the Tattersalls Gold Cup with the Australian rider Kerrin McEvoy teaming up with the former French Derby hero Sulamani.

The Godolphin horse was a Grade One winner in the US last season but reports suggest he is working much better at home this year and he is confidently expected to make a winning seasonal debut. Nysaean is a triple course and distance scorer and can chase Sulamani home.

Cairdeas, the Darshaan colt racing in the colours of President McAleese, has been backed down to as low as 16 to 1 for the Derby but will have to win the Group Three Gallinule Stakes impressively to justify such confidence.

In order to do that the not insubstantial obstacle of Aidan O'Brien's Meath is in the way and it's worth betting that the royally named colt can beat off the Presidential representative.

Meath looks to be crying out for the hike in trip up to 10 furlongs after two runner-up placings behind D'Anjou and Grey Swallow while Cairdeas didn't beat very much when breaking his maiden at Naas.

Dermot Weld, however, can pick up the 10-furlong maiden with Monaser who only just failed to overhaul the Gallinule runner Akarem on his last start at Leopardstown.
