Toulouse to face Clermont in final

RUGBY:Toulouse joined Clermont Auvergne in the Top 14 final in Paris next week with a 31-13 win over Stade Français yesterday.

After a nervy first half, which Toulouse ended 6-3 ahead, three second-half tries had Toulouse 28-6 in the lead with 20 minutes still to play.

Toulouse broke through early in the second half, when Maleli Kunavore kicked ahead and Maxime Médard won a foot race to touch down.

Jean Baptiste Elissalde and Juan Martin Hernandez then traded penalties, but with 25 minutes remaining, Yannick Jauzion sealed the result with a close-range try following a lineout steal by Fabien Pelous.

On Saturday two tries from Napolioni Nalaga fired Clermont to a 21-7 win over Perpignan.

Bree sets Irish 100-metre record in Nashville

SWIMMING:Andrew Bree set an Irish record for the 100-metre breaststroke at the weekend and now has his sights on the British championships in Liverpool next month.

At the Nashville Summer Sizzle meet, Bree took half a second off his previous record as he took gold in one minute 01.83 seconds.

Bree followed that up with gold in his main event, the 200m breaststroke in 2:14.32.

Bree will now travel to the British championships in Liverpool next month along with a team from the University of Tennessee.

For Bree it was another boost ahead of the Olympics, having recently been cleared of any wrongdoing over the use of an over-the-counter inhaler which had the trace of a banned substance.

Simpson second in Norway GP

SHOW JUMPING:Local favourite Tony Andre Hansen recorded the only clear in yesterday's Grand Prix in Drammen, Norway with David Simpson being denied a chance to make it a jump-off by a single time penalty.

The Co Derry-born Simpson, a member of the preliminary squad nominated for the European young rider show jumping championships in Prague next month, was third to go with the grey mare Cruise With Me and went clear in 86.22 seconds.

Four horses later, the Hansen-partnered Camiro 19 also left all the fences intact and came home within the time to go into the lead.

On Saturday 19-year-old Simpson and 21-year-old Anthony Condon (Cavinem) joined the more experienced pairing of Cameron Hanley (Southwinds VDL) and Shane Breen (Little Ear) to finish fourth in the Norwegian Nations' Cup behind the Dutch.

Ireland finish campaign on a high

RUGBY:Ireland finished their under-20 World Championship campaign on a high with a convincing 39-12 win over Scotland.

Two tries by wings Chris Cochrane and Dave Kearney sandwiched between Eoin O'Malley's second-half score grabbed Ireland's third win in 2008 over the Scots.

Stoner wins unchallenged

MOTOR SPORT:Reigning champion Casey Stoner reproduced the dominance he enjoyed last season for the first time to win the British Moto GP at Donington Park yesterday. After qualifying comfortably on pole position, he was never challenged on his Marlboro Ducati, eventually winning by 5.7 seconds.

Five-times champion Valentino Rossi increased his series lead over Dani Pedrosa after a classic duel between the two saw the Italian claim second.

The pair swapped positions continually throughout the first half of the race before Fiat Yamaha rider Rossi shook off the Spaniard's challenge to take an incredible 142nd podium in his 200th career race.

Rossi now leads the championship by 11 points.

Martin claims Route du Sud

CYCLING:Daniel Martin yesterday took the biggest Irish pro win in over 15 years when he won the prestigious Route du Sud race in France, writes Shane Stokes.

The first year professional had seized the race jersey on Saturday's tough mountain stage and, aided by the strong backing of his Slipstream Chipotle team, he maintained his advantage over all his main rivals on the concluding 207.1km stage to Castres.
