The inaugural rugby international Golf Invitational 2000 proved an outstanding success when 34 former internationals spanning many great years of Irish rugby turned up at Rathsallagh Golf Club for the special day. Playing in teams of four with an international on each team the winners had to call in a replacement on the first tee for Young Munster's Mick O'Callaghan. Tom O'Neill, a 14-year-old from Dunlavin filled the position perfectly as the team of Nial Browne, Paul Mullen, Joe Grey and O'Neill amassed 93 points to win by 11 from Colm Brazil, Willie Duggan, Steven Dunne and Colm Loakman who just edged Willie Doyle, Johnny Cantrell, Ger Canty and Denise McCarthy into third place.
