IN sharp contrast to their 4-1 win over the Netherlands on Sunday, India did not have a shot on tar get in a tepid 0-0 draw with Spain in the men's Olympic qualifying tournament in Barcelona yesterday.
The result brought to an end Spain's 100 per cent start to the competition after two wins, but with five points they stay top of the standings. India, still unbeaten after their opening three matches, moved into second place with four points.
It was unfortunate for India to have to play again less than 24 hours after the match against the Dutch, especially as Spain had had more than a day to recover from their second match. Neither attack was able to break down solid defences in which Juan Malgosa of Spain and Pargat Singh were in commanding form.
The Netherlands beat Malaysia 4-1 in the second match of the day. The Dutch, clearly intent on erasing the memory of their defeat by India, started at a fierce pace, taking the lead in the seventh minute when Taco van den Honert flicked high to score from their first corner.
Four minutes later right winger Stephan Veen scrambled the ball home following a long corner and he added the third goal in the 24th minute with a fine cross shot. Jacques Brinkman added a fourth on the half hour. Malaysia scored a consolation goal through Mirnawan Nawawi.
Britain swept to a 4-1 win over Belarus to join India, Holland and Malaysia on the four points mark.
Britain scored from two of their first three corners, through Jon Wyatt and Calum Giles, in the first five minutes the corner drill let them down later as they had a further eight set pieces without reward.
By the I 5th minute, however, it was 3-0 through a solo effort by left winger Nick Thompson, who went on to complete the scoring in the 61st minute after an interchange of passes with his namesake Rob Thompson.
Guennad Briborksi scored Belarus's second goal of the tournament in the 52nd minute. The eastern Europeans are without a point. Canada moved up the table with a 3-2 defeat of Belgium.
