Golf:Pádraig Harrington is out of next week's BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth because of a knee injury but the triple major winner insisted he will be 100 per cent ready to compete in next month's US Open.
The two-time British Open and US PGA champion said on his website: “I originally picked up a knee injury during the Wells Fargo Championship, which then got worse during last week’s Players Championship.
“After returning home I continued to have physio on what was originally a hamstring tear, which caused the popliteus muscle to become inflamed.
“This resulted in the inability to stabilise my knee, causing acute pain. As it hasn’t improved significantly and the recommended course of action is a couple of weeks rest, reluctantly, I am forced to withdraw from next week’s BMW PGA Championship.”
He later spoke on RTE’s Radio 1 and confirmed he will be back for the second major of the year at the Congressional which gets under way from June 16th.
“I will definitely be back for the US Open, I’ll play on a crutch if I have to,” said Harrington, who confirmed he aggravated the injury playing tag with his son.
“I’m confident with the rest I’ll be back 100 per cent fit, which is really the issue here.”
Harrington’s injury news comes after Tiger Woods was last week forced to withdraw from the Players Championship at Sawgrass after nine holes due to a knee injury.
He too said he will definitely be back in time for the US Open which Graeme McDowell will defend.
