SCOTLAND'S tour management were left with Test selection problems after knee injuries to both their outside centres, Graham Shiel and Scott Hastings.

Shiel damaged his knee at an early stage of yesterday's 63-21 victory against the South Island Divisional XV at Lansdowne Park in Blenheim, but did not come off until the second half when he was replaced by Hastings.

But Watsonian centre Hastings lasted only 12 minutes before receiving a deep cut on his left knee that needed immediate stitching and, of the two, he must be the most doubtful for Saturday's second Test.

"It is very disappointing to lose both outside centres," said team manager Jim Telfer. "Scott caught his knee on a stud in a tackle."

The selectors, however, will riot have gleaned much information on Test candidates from what was an easy game for Scotland against a scratch side.

Flanker Peter Walton who must now be an option for the Scots in the Carisbrook Test.

The Newcastle player capped a good performance with two tries a feat also achieved by wingers Tony Stanger and Ken Logan.

Scotland's other try-scorers were Gary Armstrong, Nick Broughton, Rowen Shepherd and skipper Craig Chalmers, who with five conversions and a penalty goal finished with an 18-point tally.

Scotland's tour management will now have an anxious wait before knowing the availability of Shiel and Hastings.

But it will be a wait in which they can ponder the other positions in the Test side with much focussing on the tighthead prop berth position where Barry Stewart must be in line for a first cap, lock where Damian Cronin may have edged out Stewart Campbell, and scrum-half where the selectors face a tough choice between Gary Armstrong and Andy Nicol.
