The predictions of low scoring at the US Women's Open at Old Waverly golf club proved accurate when two players, Juli Inkster and Lorie Kane reached the 10-under-par mark of 134 after just two rounds yesterday.
Inkster danced with joy after birdieing the last to shoot a 69 to add to her first-round 65. On a sweltering day she was joined in the lead by Kane, who had nine birdies in her round of 64.
The round matched the record-equalling feat of Kelli Kuehne in the first round and the 22-year-old was only one shot behind the leaders after adding a bogey-free 71 to card 135 for the two rounds. Becky Iverson, who also matched the record 64, was fourth on 136.
Se Ri Pak was also well in touch after adding a 70 yesterday to her first round 68 to be part of a group of four who were four shots off the pace.
The low scoring was not shared however by Annika Sorenstam and Laura Davies. They both missed the cut by two shots after ending on two over par 146, with Sorenstam carding a 74 and Davies a bitterly-disappointing 75.
Davies went out of bounds for a double-bogey seven at the 15th and then bunkered her approach at the last for a 75 that left her two shots too many on two-over 146.
Fellow Briton Catriona Matthew shot 68 to stay well in contention on 137.
Tiger Woods grabbed a one-shot lead after two rounds of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio, when Lee Janzen double-bogeyed the final hole. A birdie at the par-five 15th put Janzen, who had started the day with a two-stroke lead, ahead of Woods by a shot heading into the climax of the second round.
But a swirling wind hindered Janzen's six-iron approach which just missed the green, the ball coming to rest under the outside lip of the sand trap.
After trying several stances just to make contact with the ball, Janzen took a swing and advanced the ball about six feet but it stayed in the trap.
From there he blasted out, barely clearing the edge of the trap, and two-putted from 15 feet.
The double bogey-six capped a two-under round of 70 and a total of nine-under-par 135.
Woods, playing in the group immediately behind Janzen, parred out after an eagle to finish with a 66 for a 36-hole total of 10-under 134.
Woods, seeking his second victory of the season, had started the day three shots back after an opening 68.
Sergio Garcia, the 19-year-old Spaniard, also shot a 70 despite a double-bogey on the par-three 16th. He was joined at seven-under by Justin Leonard, who had a 69.
