Apart from veteran campaigner Paul Cooke, Instonians fielded virtually their full European Championship (B division) title-winning side in the final of the Budweiser Super Cup hockey tournament at Grange Road yesterday. But they met stout resistance from Three Rock Rovers, before regaining the trophy through a short-corner goal whipped past the hosts' skipper Anthony O'Neill by Patrick Browne two minutes from the end.

All of the matches were tightly contested. Cork C of I, though missing several leading figures, beat Instonians in their pool game and lost only on strokes to Rovers in the semi-finals. Instonians were at their best in ousting the holders, Grange, from Scotland, 4-3.

Corinthians enjoyed their invitation by taking fifth place. Notably they defeated Glenanne, 3-1, and with three Australians in their ranks - Paul Armitage, Colin Stewart and James Benson - may make an impression in the Leinster Championship.

Marillac, though they gained promotion, have withdrawn from division two of the Leinster League because of a reduction of their playing strength. They will compete instead in division eight and will not be replaced in the second division, leaving nine teams in contention.
