Inya Lake successfully crossed the gulf from humble selling races to pattern company as she registered a shock 20 to 1 victory at Goodwood yesterday.
The winner of a seller at Doncaster's Lincoln meeting in March, Inya Lake completed a remarkably rapid climb through the ranks with a triumph in the Jockey Club of Kenya Molecomb Stakes.
Ridden by Richard Quinn, she took charge inside the final furlong to defeat Amazing Dream by one length with the favourite Speedy James a further half length back in the Group Three event.
Inya Lake suffered from a dodgy knee in her early days and it was trainer Mick Channon that recommended the filly's owner-breeder Barry Minty to start her off in a seller.
"As a foal Inya Lake had a hairline fracture of the knee and as Barry owns the filly's sire Whittingham I told him we might be able to get the sire on the map by winning the seller," said Channon.
After the Doncaster race Channon retained the filly for 8,200 guineas - and that now looks like a great piece of business.
Inya Lake had shown herself to be substantially better than a plater with solid efforts in Group races at Royal Ascot and Deauville. "Her starting price today was ridiculous when you consider that she finished ahead of Speedy James and then was beaten about three lengths at Deauville," said Channon.
"Her defeat at Newbury last time out was trainer error. I was too greedy. It was really soft ground and we tried to make the running and burst her."
The plan now is to return to Doncaster next month and run Inya Lake in the Flying Childers Stakes. "Maybe after that we can go for the Prix de l'Abbaye - now that would be something!"
The stewards inquired into two cases of interference between the winner and Henry Hall before allowing the result to stand. They found both Quinn and Henry Hall's jockey John Reid guilty of careless riding.
Quinn's misdemeanour was viewed the more serious and he was banned for four days (August 9th-12th) while Reid is suspended on August 9th and 10th.
Sabadilla, fifth to Fruits of Love in the Group Two Princess of Wales's Stakes at Newmarket's July Meeting on his latest start, made full use of an easier opportunity in the Listed Theo Fennell Glorious Rated Stakes.
Greek Palace, the 2 to 1 favourite and conqueror of Sabadilla in the Bessborough Handicap at Royal Ascot last month, was still travelling with supreme comfort when taking up the running entering the final quarter mile.
But, as when third in the valuable Hong Kong Jockey Club Trophy Handicap at Sandown four weeks ago, Greek Palace found a good deal less under pressure than his supporters would have hoped for. Taking over with a furlong to race, Sabadilla resisted the late thrust of Yavana's Pace, winner of the Hong Kong race, by half a length at 7 to 2.
Henry Cecil unveiled another juvenile of potential in Enrique, who made a winning debut at 8 to 13 in the European Breeders Fund Foxhall Maiden.
The bay son of Barathea, out of Cecil's useful sprinter Gwydion, was dashed to the front by Kieren Fallon (who also rode the winner of the last two races) approaching the final quarter mile but longtime leader Sporting Lad refused to fold and Enrique had to be firmly pushed out for a two-length win.
Ladbrokes, who this morning had listed Enrique at 20 to 1 for next year's 2,000 Guineas, pushed him out to 25's.
