IOC member gets time to think about his crime

Another International Olympic Committee (IOC) member bit the dust this week

Another International Olympic Committee (IOC) member bit the dust this week. Bob Hassan, a crony of former Indonesian president Suharto, but worthy enough to be one of those chosen by Juan Antonio Samaranch, was sentenced to six years in prison for defrauding the state forestry association. The sum was in the order of hundreds of millions of dollars. The court has ordered Hassan to pay $243 million in compensation. In keeping with current IOC trends Hassan, who was a member of the IOC's Cultural Commission, Radio and Television Commission and, naturally, the New Source of Financing Commission, joins a number of IOC luminaries.

There are the 10 IOC members who were ejected or forced to resign from the organisation for accepting bribes, including Idi Amin's former military chief of staff and Minister of Defence, Major General Nyangweso, a member since 1988. A few others have been refused visas to enter what are generally regarded civilised countries. Wonder if Hassan will be expelled?
