Boys' Golf: Wales have taken a 6-2 lead over Ireland after the opening round of singles matches in the Boys International played at Rosslare GC yesterday.

Ireland have been holders of the Cardigan Cup since the competition's inception in 1995, but they have left themselves considerable ground to make up in this morning's foursomes, which will be followed by the singles in the afternoon.

It was an especially enjoyable day for the Welsh, who finished with a clear advantage having won three of the mornings singles with one halved.

Ireland finished the day strongly with Ballinasloe's Michael McHugh gaining a one hole victory over Alwyn Thomas. Ireland halved two of their earlier matches through David Briden (Gold Coast) and Colm Montgomery (Malone).
