IN a crucial encounter in Group B of the Under 18 European Soccer, Championships, both Ireland and, Spain were desperate for a win in Florange, France, last night to put them into the driving seat for qualification to the final.
In the end, the Spanish were a little unlucky not to squeeze out the all important victory. In general they outplayed Ireland. In the 15th minute Irish defender Stephen Murphy was lucky not to concede a penalty..
Thereafter the Spanish moved forward at will but they could not break down the resilient defence.
On the stroke of half time, Spain's Cabezs broke down the left and his pinpoint cross went beyond the outstretched fingertips of Irish goalkeeper Derek O'Connor, only for a three charging Spaniards to miss the vital touch.
But in truth Ireland did not create necessary chances to deserve anything more than they got. With Italy and England drawing in the afternoon, Ireland can still qualify. They face England tomorrow.
Only the group winners will make it through to the final, but an added incentive is the guarantee of a place in next year's world championships in Malaysia for the first three teams in the group.
