Stackstown teenager Mark Campbell made his singles debut for Ireland in the Men's Home Internationals at Royal County Down yesterday, and what a debut it was, as Ireland blitzed Scotland, winning 10 of the 15 matches and getting a half in another.

Today, it's Ireland against England for the Raymond Trophy after England, going for an record seven wins in a row, demolished Wales 11-3 and added a half for good measure. England are three matches ahead of the host team so a share of the spoils today would not do the Irish.

Campbell (19), was left out of the morning foursomes but stormed off in his singles match against 1998 British Boys' Champion Steven O'Hara by winning the opening four holes, the first with eagle three where he reached the green with a drive and nine iron and rolled in a 25 foot putt.

"A dream start," smiled Mark who handed in a 4 and 3 result, "but, in those windy conditions, this is the hardest course I have ever played." Paddy Gribben, despite losing the 16th and 17th holes, won by one hole while Noel Fox, Andrew McCormick and Garth McGimpsey were early winners.

McGimpsey's 2 and 1 victory over another former Walker Cup player, Graham Fox, was the one which made certain of overall victory for Ireland. Michael Sinclair and Michael Hoey added two more wins.

In the morning foursomes, Ireland could well have taken all five matches but there was disappointment in the back matches when Eddie Power and Michael Hoey lost the last match by one hole after Adrian Morrow had holed in a super six foot putt to snatch a half for himself and Gary Cullen. Power and Hoey had been one up after 15 holes but lost the next and were in trouble at the 18th. Hoey's approach, into the wind, hit the side of the green and rolled into the right-hand dip. Power's recovery then flew across the green and when Craig Watson left Scotland's putt stone dead he had snatched a dramatic one hole win for Scotland.

The top three matches were won in style. Garth McGimpsey and Noel Fox had a 2 and 1 win with Ciaran McMonagle and Michael Sinclair kept their unbeaten foursomes record.
