If this first one-day international at Kenure in Rush yesterday is a true yardstick of the strength of the opposition, the officials of the Irish Women's Cricket Union had better arrange plenty of leisure activities for the Pakistanis on at least two days of next week's four-day Test match at College Park.

Maybe the tourists will do better in the one-dayers tomorrow and Thursday, but yesterday, they looked out of their depth. After Miriam Grealey had won the toss and elected to field, Pakistan began well, with Shaiza Khan and Nazia Nazeer putting on an encouraging 41 for the first wicket, before Catherine O'Neill removed Nazeer.

O'Neill and Saibh Young picked three wickets apiece. And a special mention must be made of Barbara McDonald, who took just one wicket, but gave away only 16 runs off her 10 overs.

Karen Young, winning her first Ireland cap, helped Clare O'Leary put on 34 runs for the first wicket before she was given out stumped. But that was to be Ireland's only loss, as Caitriona Beggs helped O'Leary get the remaining runs without any great difficulty. O'Leary was the game's top-scorer, with a fine 53, off 61 deliveries and including nine fours.
