Athletics: Ireland's Keith Kelly yesterday won the highly competitive American NCAA collegiate cross-country title, becoming only the fourth Irish scholarship athlete to do so.

Hosted by Iowa State University, the 10km race included all the leading distance runners in American universities, but Kelly, who hails from Drogheda, produced the best race of his career to take the title in 30 minutes 14.5 seconds.

Running in the colours of Providence College (where he is coached by Ray Treacy - brother of John) Kelly proved too strong for the second placed Stephen Ondieki of Kenya, who took second in 30:16.3.

The 22-year-old becomes the third Irishman to win the event after Sean Dollman in 1991 and Neil Cusack in 1972. Sonia O'Sullivan is a previous winner of the women's race. John Treacy, also competing for Providence College, finished second in 1977 behind Henry Rono of Kenya.
