Golf:Ireland advanced to the semi-finals of the European Girls Team Championship after a convincing 3½-1½ win over Belgium in Kokkola, Finland today.
Sinead Keane’s side made the perfect start in today’s quarter-final, claiming convincing wins in both morning foursomes matches. The Maguire twins, Lisa and Leona (Slieve Russell) secured a comfortable 4 and 3 victory, while Laura McCarthy (Muskerry) and Stephanie Meadow (Royal Portrush) followed with an even better 6 and 4 win.
That left Ireland only needing one point from the three afternoon singles matches. Despite Lisa losing the top match 2 and 1 to Lauren van Gerven, sister Leona rose to the challenge with a 4 and 2 win over Margaux Vanmol in the middle match.
With victory secured Meadow was called in from her match against Manon de Roey.
Ireland will now take on England in tomorrow’s semi-final for a place in Saturday's final.
