The Irish Rugby Football Union had a major win over three of the other major sporting organisations, the GUI, the FAI and the GAA, in the annual golf outing held last week in Royal Dublin. Hosted by the Golfing Union of Ireland, the day proved a triumph for the IRFU as Wello Murphy took the individual prize with 37 points. Murray's victory deprived the Golfing Union's Albert Lee, the chairman of the Leinster Branch, of a hat-trick of victories.
Lee, from Mullingar Golf Club, looked set to take his third individual title in-a-row when he stood on the 18th tee with 35 points, but he then carved his drive out of bounds. There was some consolation for Lee, however, as his 35 points were good enough to win him the main prize for the GUI players.
For the soccer players former Shamrock Rovers and Irish international Mick Lawlor was best with 36 points, a score matched for the rugby team by ex-Clontarf and Irish international Niall Brophy. For the Gaelic players, Pat Toner was best with 35 points.
Best gross return of the day came from Irish golf international Noel Fox who returned 36 points, but which, off his handicap of plus four, reduced his return to 32 points.
