SAILING/Cork Week: Cork Week 2004 ended on a high across most of the major classes for Irish crews yesterday with three class wins plus more than a dozen top-three results varying from the professional fleets to club-level entrants.

Roy Disney's Pyewacket romped home in Class Zero in a lonely final race off Roche's Point, ending the week as it began, becalmed towards the finish, which allowed smaller boats to close so the 86-footer only scored a third.

But the acclaim deservedly goes to a clutch of Irish sailing household names who topped their fleets, usually of 30 boats or more. Class 1 saw George Sisk record one of the best scores of the event with three race wins to emerge overall victor on board Wow. Howth's Anthony Gore-Grimes also produced the goods in Class 6 when Dux recorded four wins although a late charge from clubmate Michael Guinan on Phantom saw the pair tied on points. Paralympian John Twomey reclaimed his overall lead of Class 7 on board his new Sonar, Cool Runnings Too.

In the Sigma 33 class Silver fleet, there was a first place for Miss Behavin from Dún Laoghaire while Eric Curtis's Foxy Lady won overall under the ECHO fleet series. Among the runners-up, Colm Barrington was second overall in Class Zero behind Pyewacket.

The crew of DK46 Fidessa Fastwave won Class 2 on board the Solent's top Beneteau 40.7 Tarka, in the process winning the outright boat-of-the-week award for best scored entry. Runner-up in the class was Calyx Voice & Data. The 32-footer is team-mate to Fidessa in the forthcoming Rolex Commodore's Cup in Cowes while Flying Glove is the third team member.

Eamon Connelly's Galway team on board Dark Angel was third overall in Class 1 while Barry and David Rose on Obsession staged a comeback in Class 3 to finish second to Yeomantix, also known as Antix.

In the one-designs, defending title holder Tim Goodbody on White Mischief from the Royal Irish Yacht Club could only claw back to third overall after taking a set of bad results on Tuesday. Having dominated the class from the outset, Colin Porteous on Squawk is the new Sigma European Champion.
