Special Olympics: Each member of Special Olympics Team Ireland won a medal in the last day of Alpine skiing, the slalom events, at the 2001 Special Olympics World Winter Games in Alaska.

Cormac Maguire, Jim Nugent, Jacinta O'Neill and Warren Tate won silvers in the M07, M08, F09 and M03 divisions respectively, while Finbarr Hughes and Lorraine Whelan took bronze in the M08 and F02 divisions.

These performances brought Ireland's total medal tally to one gold, eight silver and two bronze.

Cycling: Belgium's Peter Van Petegem snatched a thrilling victory on the second stage of the Paris-Nice race to Saint-Etienne yesterday, pipping Alexander Vinokorov in the final few metres.

Van Petegem caught Vinokorov an agonising few metres from the line after the Kazakh rider had attacked for the finish at the end of the gruelling 195.4km run.

Van Petegem, riding for Mercury-Viatel, also took the overall leader's white jersey.

Athletics: The IAAF Council agreed yesterday to experiment at second-tier Grand Prix events with allowing just one false start rather than the current two per athlete in events under 400 metres.

IAAF Council members said the rule change would stop cheating and also make sprinting a better spectacle for television. The change follows the mens' 60 metres world indoor final on Sunday, which was marred by several false starts before Nigerian Deji Aliu was disqualified.
