Steven Thompson smashed in the winning goal as Scotland's under-21s earned victory over their Republic of Ireland counterparts in Elgin last night. And it was Celtic's Mark Burchill whose header set up Dundee United striker Thompson's 45th-minute volley.

The Irish threatened an equaliser when Danny Boxall found time and space in the area, but the Brentford defender hooked his shot well over the bar.
