Ireland were beaten by Wales in a rousing Pool B match in the European under 21 hockey championship (B division) in Padova, Italy, last evening. They fought back from half-time arrears of 2-0 to lead 3-2 12 minutes into the second half, but surprisingly found themselves out-flanked. The result means that both teams will probably be in the semi-finals but Ireland may have the tougher task against France with Wales - set to win the group - likely to meet Italy. Ireland need to tighten up defensively if promotion to the A division is to be achieved. Last night, Ireland did most of the pressing in the first half, but though numerous opportunities were created, the shooting lacked venom.
Wales counter-attacked three times - and scored twice. Tristan Gilbody took advantage of hesitancy in the Irish defence to push home the first goal in the ninth minute; four minutes before the interval, captain Rhys Joyce drove through unhindered to easily beat Dale McNeill. Ireland made a controlled start to the second period. Justin Sherriff soon set up Andrew Cousins to roof the ball into the net at the far post and then Chris Jackson finished off a classically worked penalty corner. So it was 2-2 after five minutes and then Sherriff broke clear on a solo run to put Ireland spectacularly ahead. Wales equalised, however, through James Ogden from a corner drag flick; and 11 minutes from the end, Ireland were caught again on the break for James Bainbridge to steer home the winning goal. Despite unstinting efforts by Jackson and Sherriff in the closing stages, Ireland could not get on terms.
