We were tempted to give our first award of the season to Portsmouth's John Durnin, if only because he could do with a bit of a pick-me-up at the moment. Having gone to hell and back in pre-season training to get himself into shape for Saturday's opener against Sheffield United, Durnin treated himself to a round of golf with team-mate Alan McLoughlin at Woodbury Park in Devon. A wayward drive sent him in to the rough in search of his ball, on board his golf buggy. The buggy overturned and he was left with a dislocated elbow that will force him to miss the first six weeks of the season. Get well soon John.

Bradford's Andy O'Brien was another candidate for our award after turning in what his manager Paul Jewell described as a "magnificent" performance on his Premiership debut against Middlesbrough on Saturday (marking a chubby Gazza out of the game) while, in the third division, Irish under-21 goalkeeper Alex O'Reilly made an impressive league debut for Northampton, where he is on loan from West Ham.

But we've plumped for former Bohemians and Newcastle United midfielder Jim Crawford who came on as a substitute on Saturday and scored his first league goal in English football (a diving header five minutes from time against Bristol City) to give Reading a 2-1 win.
