Irish run well in Glasgow

Irish athletes came home with a hat-full of medals from the Scottish indoor championships in Glasgow yesterday

Irish athletes came home with a hat-full of medals from the Scottish indoor championships in Glasgow yesterday. Dave Matthews won the 800 metres in one of many nail-biting finishes in one minute 50.98 seconds. His club-mate, James Nolan, won the 1500 metres title from Britain's Ian Campbell in an unspectacular 3:50.46.

But Olympic sprinter Gary Ryan was less than happy with his 200 metres final performance, despite winning by five metres in 21.61.

Ryan's training partner, Tom Comyns, was disqualified for running out of his land. But disputes over spikes and race timing fired Lena Barry to victory in the women's 200 metres. Already runner-up in a close 60 metres, Barry returned 24.91 over 200 metres to snatch a win.

Heptathlon record holder Sharon Foley (Lifford) won the high jump with 1.80 metres.

And Kilkenny's Sean Lonergan led an Irish clean sweep of the men's triple jump.

Ethiopian 10,000 metres Olympic champion Haile Gebrselassie broke his 3,000 metres world indoor record in Karlsruhe, Germany, yesterday in 7:26.14 seconds.
