US PGA Tour:Sweden's Fredrik Jacobson shot a three-under-par 67 to grab the early clubhouse lead in the St Jude Championship in Memphis, Tennessee.

That left him two strokes clear of American Scott Verplank and Australian Gavin Coles over the TPC at Southwind course. Padraig Harrington was one over through 11 holes.

EUROPEAN CHALLENGE TOUR:Michael Hoey leads the Irish charge on the Challenge Tour yet again after the first round of the Vodafone Challenge in Germany.

The Belfast 28-year-old posted an opening two-under-par 70 at the Golf and Country Club An der Elfrather Muhle in Dusseldorf to lie just three shots off the pace, set by Lorenzo Gagli of Italy and German amateur Maximilian Kieffer.

Remarkably, Hoey had six birdies in his round, but he also threw in a triple-bogey seven at the seventh, his 16th. But he bounced back immediately by birdieing his last two holes.

Hoey's countrymen could not match his under-par performance. Justin Brink shot a first round of two-over 74, Colm Moriarty a 77 and Stephen Browne a 78.

LPGA TOUR:Rookie Angela Park birdied two of her last four holes for a five-under-par 67 and a share of the early lead in the LPGA Championship first round.

The Brazilian, who teed off at the par-four 10th, recovered from a three-putt bogey on the fourth with birdies at the sixth, where she rolled in a 25-footer, and eighth.

That put her level with American Kim Saiki-Maloney and South Korea's Birdie Kim on a sun-drenched day at the Bulle Rock Golf Course.

Australia's Karrie Webb was a further stroke back in a tie for fourth after opening with a 68.

US NATIONWIDE TOUR:Keith Nolan shot a one-over-par 72 to be well off the pace in the first round of the Rex Hospital Open at PC Wakefield Plantation, Raleigh, North Carolina. He trails leaders Tom Carter and Kyle Thompson by eight shots.
