Golf: Dustin Johnson is up to a career-high fourth in the world after his victory in the first of the FedEx Cup play-off events in New Jersey. There was a cut to 54 holes and a Saturday finish to The Barclays because of Hurricane Irene and Johnson shot a closing 65 to beat fellow American Matt Kuchar by two.

His win pushes German Martin Kaymer and Northern Ireland's US Open champion Rory McIlroy down to fifth and sixth respectively in the rankings.

England's Justin Rose and Brian Davis were the leading Europeans in joint sixth place and that was good enough to make Rose yet another player to go past Tiger Woods on the rankings.

With Gary Woodland finishing 13th Woods, who failed to qualify for the play-offs, will be down to 38th when the new list is officially released tomorrow.

The second of the play-offs is also on America's east coast, but the Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston does not start until Friday.

Pádraig Harrington, who only just made it into last week's 125-strong field, also came 13th on 12 under after a 69 and climbed to 80th on the points list.

That keeps him in the four-event series with 100 playing in Boston, but only 70 then make it to the BMW Championship in Chicago on September 15-18 and then a mere 30 into the following week's Tour Championship in Atlanta.

Graeme McDowell carded a three-under-par 68 to finish on eight under.

It was a fifth career victory for Johnson, who also won a weather-shortened tournament at Pebble Beach in 2009.

The players teed off early on Saturday in an effort to beat the weather, and Johnson - who trailed Kuchar by one - enjoyed a blistering opening at Plainfield Country Club.

He reached the turn in 29 thanks to five birdies and an eagle in an outward nine marred by only one bogey.

Kuchar also made a fast start and was five under for the day through 11 holes, but bogeys on 12 and 13 put paid to the 33-year-old's chances.

Brandt Snedeker signed for the round of the day - a 10-under-par 61 to finish three shots off the pace and joint third with Fiji's Vijay Singh (68).
