IRELAND'S David Jones maintained a remarkable 25 year record of never missing a cut in African safari tournaments, but it was a dose run thing in the second round of the Kenyan Open in sweltering Nairobi yesterday.
Jones added a 72 to his opening 69 to make the cut by two shots but, with two holes to play, it was touch and go. "The heat got to me a and 1 started to lose concentration," said Jones, the Kenyan Open winner in 1989. "But then I thought of my record. It's a records I want to keep and I managed to get back on track again."
Jones goes into to day's third, round seven shots behind leaders Mikael Krantz (Sweden) and Mike Miller (Scotland), who had a 66 yesterday despite suffering in the severe heat which caused England's John Morgan to collapse on the fourth tee. He had to be carried from the course by ambulance.
Martin Sludds, playing his first competition since last October, qualified for the last two rounds with level par scores of 71, 71 but, Stephen Hamill missed out with rounds of 74 and 70.
