Southern representation on the national cricket squad - rather thin on the ground in recent times - has been further enhanced by the call-up of Ed Joyce of Merrion and Leinster's Johnny Byrne for the defence of the Triple Crown in Birmingham tomorrow, Wednesday and Thursday.

The pair have been brought into the 13-man squad to replace Decker Curry (Limavady) and Peter Gillespie (Strabane), who have withdrawn because of work commitments. Earlier last week, John Davy of Pembroke was also called up to replace the injured Mark Patterson.

Davy, Joyce and Byrne are all uncapped, but may well make their senior international debuts in the three-day Triple Crown campaign. Joyce was one of the stars in the Ireland under-19 side's successful run in the International Youth Tournament in Bermuda, and his century against Denmark was the only one scored in the competition.

IRISH UNIVERSITIES (v Queensland University, College Park, Wednesday, 1.00): P Lee (capt), W Horwood, R O'Reilly, P Davy, M Barriscale, G Joyce, M Patton, B Nolan, I Latham, F Hoey, J Atkinson.

Opening baty Jason Molins, who had scored 123 against YMCA on Saturday, added an undefeated century to scupper Leinster at Kimmage yesterday and push Carlisle to the top of the Senior League Section A table. His unbeaten 120 was a near faultless innings which included 16 fours, and the first wicket stand of 154 which he shared with Mark Cohen effectively wrecked Leinster's chances.
