LENNOX LEWIS'S WBC heavy weight title defence against Henry Akinwande has been confirmed for Atlantic City on July 12th.
The fight will be televised for midnight transmission on Sky television. Lewis will have a part share of a promotion which could net him over £2 million.
Atlantic City is a happy hunting ground for the 31 year old Lewis, who has won three of his fights in the New Jersey gambling resort. He beat Mike Dixon there in 1992, made a successful title defence against Phil Jackson in his first term as WBC champion two years later, and returned to dismantle Tommy Morrison in six rounds 18 months ago.
Meanwhile, Riddick Bowe the former undisputed world heavy weight champion, has retired.
Bowe, who will now work for cable TV channel Home Box Office, took beatings in his last two fights against Andrew Golota although he won both on disqualifications to end with a record of 40 wins, one loss, with 32 knockouts.
At the Seoul Olympics in 1988, Bowe won the silver medal in the super heavyweight division, losing in the final to Lennox Lewis. Bowe turned professional in 1989 and three years later, he won tlie undisputed heavyweight championship with a unanimous decision over Evander Holyfield.
