Junior Delgado is one of reggae's mighty voices. As a youth in Jamaica, he was one of the kids who hung around Lee "Scratch" Perry's legendary Black Ark studio. There, as a member of Time Unlimited, he recorded a mesmerising version of 23rd Psalm which became a huge cult hit when it was released in 1974. All were wowed by his voice, a sound which brought such greats as Dennis Brown and Ken Boothe to mind.
This acclaim set Junior on a well-travelled road. Many albums and singles followed, all containing the touches of many eminent names. Sly & Robbie, Augustus Pablo, Joe Gibbs and more ensured Junior's sweet voice was always paired with some fierce rhythms for albums like Taste Of The Young Heart and Dance A Dub.
These days, Junior is still an important component of the reggae scene. The Incredible Music complex in London, single releases on his own label by Gregory Isaacs and Sugar Minott and tours throughout Africa and Europe testify to Junior's ongoing hard work and appeal. Now with a new deal with Big Cat (a subsidiary of Richard Branson's V2 company), the Fearless album saw the likes of Smith & Mighty, Jerry Dammers and Ultimatum (Stereo MCs) stepping up and paying homage to the classic voice. Junior, it seems, has found his way into the new school.
Junior Delgado plays the Temple Bar Music Centre on Thursday April 29th
