CLONDALKIN cruiserweight, Ray Kane is ready to overcome an awkward examination at the Ulster Hall, Belfast, tonight and move closer to a crack at the European championship.
The 27 year old former international heavyweight meets Darren Corbett, of Belfast, for the vacant Irish title.
Kane has been training for the past month in the Mountains of Mourne, and his coach, John Breen, says: "He will be too skilful for Corbett. Obviously there's always the concern about Darren's big left hook. We have prepared for that."
Corbett, a 24 year old, has shed four stones during the past year to slim down from super heavyweight. His coach, Gerry Storey, claims that his the wild man image is now behind him. "He's a changed fighter, working to instructions," said Storey. Storey's 32 year old son, Sam, is in the chief supporting role, making a comeback following a year out of the ring.
Storey meets Butch Leslie, of London, and says: "If all goes well, I'll start pushing for a shot at Steve Collins, providing he keeps his title when he defends against Nigel Benn on Saturday night."
The eight bout bill also features other ex internationals, Paul Douglas, Tommy Waite, Colm Moffatt, Eamon Magee and Paul Ireland, and Dublin light middleweight, Jim Rock.
