Martin Kaymer continued a brilliant return to golf today when he completed an opening 63 at the Castello Masters and shared the lead with Sergio Garcia. The 24-year-old German has not played since breaking toes in a go-kart crash in August - and only began full practice when he arrived in Spain this week.
Four under par after 12 holes when play was called off last night - there had been an earlier three-hour stoppage for high winds - Kaymer made it four birdies in a row by picking up further shots at the 13th and 14th.
Despite a clear limp he then finished with two more to join Garcia, the tournament host and defending champion on his home course.
Kaymer was top of the European Tour money list when the accident happened in Arizona and has since dropped to third behind Rory McIlroy and new leader Lee Westwood - but he could go straight back to the top by winning on Sunday.
Australian Robert Allenby was poised to make it a three-way tie when he stood eight under with two to play, but a bogey on the 503-yard par-four 17th and a closing par meant he finished the round in joint third with Swede Michael Jonzon.
Kaymer and Allenby were quickly into second-round action as the event tried to make up for lost time.
