Roy Keane yesterday broke his silence on the cruciate ligament injury that will keep him out for the rest of the season, insisting he has no regrets over his uncompromising style. Keane sustained the injury that all footballers dread when he threw himself into a needless challenge on Leeds' Alf-Inge Haaland at Elland Road last week.

Keane said: "People are going to say `if only he hadn't played on Saturday, if only he hadn't signed for United, if only he hadn't made the run forward', whatever.

"But I was going for the ball and the player came across me. After that I just felt my knee go, something snapped in my leg.

"The reality is that I have got the injury and I have got to get on with it. I don't regret anything.

"The injury is quite serious and I'll be out for a while, but I've just got to look to the future," said Keane, who had the scale of the damage diagnosed during an exploratory operation on Monday and will go under the surgeon's knife again to repair the cruciate damage in about four weeks' time.

"I will build my leg up for the next few weeks before I have the operation and then I'm in the hands of our physio David Fevre."

Meanwhile, United's scheduled European Champions League clash with Kosice at Old Trafford on November 26th is set to be put back 24 hours.

It seems likely that both United's encounter with Kosice and the other Group B game between Feyenoord and Juventus will be played on the Thursday to cater for the demands of television.
