The United States used a goal by Preki and a stream of saves by Kasey Keller to shock world champions Brazil 1-0 in the semi-finals of the CONCACAF Gold Cup in Los Angeles.

Preki, a naturalized US citizen, grabbed the first US goal against Brazil since 1930 when he curled the ball into Tafarel's goal in the 64th minute of the Tuesday night game.

But it was Keller, who arrived from club duty in England on Sunday night to take over from Brad Friedel in the US goal, who made the first US victory over Brazil possible.

Keller made half a dozen saves in the first half alone as the Brazilians, while clearly not up to their best, dominated the action.

After the interval, the United States created more opportunities.

Five countries have applied to play host to the European Championship finals in 2004. Austria, Hungary, Portugal, Spain and Switzerland all informed European governing body UEFA in writing before the February 10th deadline that they are interested in organising the finals. But Austria and Hungary have stressed they will submit a joint bid, while Portugal have indicated they are only prepared to host the event if they are able to find another nation as a partner.
