LEE KELLEHER (14), from Cork, was the outstanding Irish swimmer on the first day of the British Grand Prix in Cardiff yesterday. Kelliher, who finished with a 100 metres butterfly silver medal in last year's European Youth Olympics in Bath, swept into the senior final of the 200 metres butterfly in an Irish junior record time.
She erased an eight year old record from the books with a committed swim of two minutes 23.20 seconds, taking 1.03 seconds off the standard set by Niamh Campbell in Edinburgh in 1988 against an experienced field she could not repeat her record effort in the final but was far from disgraced with an eighth place time of two minutes 25.41 seconds.
Adrian O'Connor of New Ross missed out on a silver medal in the 50 metres backstroke by one hundredth of a second.
