Tranmere have appointed former Republic of Ireland striker David Kelly as their new assistant manager. Kelly has been playing with Derry City in the National League Premier Divison this season and played his part in their progress to the FAI Cup final.
He yet may play some part in the final at Tolka Park on Sunday week as he will not register to play again in England and will just have a coaching role at his old club.
The 36-year-old is returning to a club where he made more than 100 appearances, scoring 35 goals.
Tranmere manager Ray Mathias said: "It's great to see David return, he is a great character and will be a huge asset to the club."
Kelly, who played with 10 members of the squad during his previous spell at the club, was also thrilled to get his first coaching role at Tranmere.
"It's always been an ambition of mine to go into coaching and it's great to get the chance at Prenton Park," said Kelly.
Former Leicester midfielder Dennis Wise has launched a High Court action against the club to reclaim more than £2.3 million in lost earnings following the termination of his contract in August.
Wise was sacked after an altercation with team-mate Callum Davidson on a pre-season tourof Finland. He challenged his dismissal but a four-man tribunal panel ruled last month that Leicester were within their rights to sack the former England star. This latest development comes at the worst possible time for Leicester, with the club understood to be around £30 million in debt.
Steven Gerard limped off in England's match on Wednesday and joins Emile Heskey (groin) on Gerard Houllier's injury list.
The 22-year-old is expected to miss Liverpool's clash at Leeds at noon tomorrow and possibly Tuesday's Champions League showdown against Spartak Moscow in Russia.
"I think my hip might be a problem for the weekend," said Gerrard yesterday.
"I don't know about next week. I got a nasty bang when I went up for a header. It's swelled up a bit as it's bruised, so I'll be in a bit of pain for a few days at least."
Celtic's UEFA Cup second-round, first-leg tie against Blackburn on October 31st will be shown live on BBC 1.
Chelsea winger Boudewijn Zenden is facing a spell on the sidelines after picking up an ankle injury during Holland's Euro 2004 qualifier against Austria on Wednesday night. Zenden limped out of the 3-0 win in Vienna in the 70th minute and his prospects do not look good.
"Nothing is broken and I also think that nothing is torn," he said. "But I have lots of pain and can hardly stand on the foot. I'm afraid that I will be out for Chelsea for a few weeks."
