Motor Sport: David Kennedy powered a Formula 5000 Lola to an impressive feature race win at Mondello Park yesterday, beating English drivers Frank Lyons and Nick Crossley. Quentin Smith won the opening race for Fiat Unos from Brian Hade. Jenny Ryan finished third only to be disqualified as her car was deemed to be under the regulation minimum weight and the place went to PJ Lawlor. Noel Roddy was almost caught on the finish line by Vivion Daly in the Formula Europa race with Gregg Murphy third.

Alan Dwyer, Alan Ring and George McAlpin were the top three in Formula Ford Zetec. Alan Dawson took the flag in the strykers race, while Johnny Flynn and Des Bruton moved up a place when Robert Taylor spun down to eighth. The final race for Fiat Punto was won by Liam Denning, with Andrew McKinney second and Robert Copeland third.

Cricket: Former Sri Lankan captain Arjuna Ranatunga denied match-fixing charges in a letter published on Sunday, saying he felt insulted even to have to consider them.

Ranatunga, who has just been questioned along with leading Sri Lankan batsman Aravinda de Silva following a worldwide probe into cricket corruption, argued that the allegations by an Indian bookmaker were too weak to be taken seriously.

"The allegations against me are based entirely on the wholly uncorroborated evidence of a self-confessed rogue.

"The said allegations are so patently ridiculous and manifestly unworthy of consideration that I should have thought that the BCCSL (Sri Lanka cricket board) or any person of sound mind possessed of even an iota of sense of justice would have rejected them with the contempt they deserve."

The letter was sent to lawyer Desmond Fernando, appointed by the Sri Lankan cricket board last November to examine allegations in an Indian police report that Ranatunga and de Silva had taken bribes from bookmakers to throw matches.

Squash: Derek Ryan won through to the final of the Italian Open Squash championship in Brescia, beating Swiss qualifier Lars Harms 3-0, but lost out to England's Adrian Grant for the title.
