Kennelly loss big blow to Ireland

International Rules News: Tadhg Kennelly is out of next month's International Rules series in Australia

International Rules News: Tadhg Kennelly is out of next month's International Rules series in Australia. The news is a severe setback for Ireland manager John O'Keeffe, who earlier this week lost his captain, Kerry's Séamus Moynihan, with a torn calf muscle.

Moynihan was one of the best and most experienced players at Ireland's disposal and his absence will be compounded by this latest loss.

A former Kerry minor, Kennelly - a son of All-Ireland winning captain Tim and brother of current county player Noel - has made a successful career in the AFL with the Sydney Swans.

He was one of Ireland's most successful players the last time the series was played in Australia and also took part in last year's matches in Dublin.

"Injuries are getting to be a concern," said O'Keeffe last night. "Tadhg has picked up a suspected hernia, some type of abdominal injury, and his club are anxious that he undergo surgery and maximise his rest period before next season.

"I'm just looking forward to finalising the panel so that we can concentrate on the job in hand."

The Ireland manager has also had to cope with the retirement or withdrawal of a number of international players, such as former vice-captain Peter Canavan and Meath full back Darren Fay.

Kennelly's athleticism and knowledge of the international code's two constituent games made him a valuable asset. His performance in the second Adelaide Test two years ago was his best, with five overs (15 points) a major contribution to the series win.

Kennelly and Moynihan were two of the first 11 players announced last week as members of the travelling panel. The balance of the selection will be released next week after the All-Ireland football final.
