KERRY scored a thrilling two point victory, playing some excellent football in the process, in this National League tie at Austin Stack Park in Tralee yesterday and were given a standing ovation at the finish. The reaction of the home supporters was in stark contrast to the harsh criticism meted out to the team after their defeat by an understrength Meath team earlier in the League.
This was a smashing game, particularly in the second half, and a late comeback by Donegal just failed to snatch a draw.
Donegal's corner forward Brian Roper opened his side's account with a point in the 11th minute, following a jinking run, but John Crowley scored his second point of the game in the 12th minute and three minutes later was the instigator as Kerry scored their opening goal.
His high ball goalwards was flicked on by John Cronin for Farrell to gather and shoot left footed to the roof of the net.
Donegal, using their short passing game, had the majority of possession for the remainder of the half, but rarely managed to get into threatening positions. Then, in the 25th minute, Roper, with another run, laid the ball off for half back Sean McEwan, who was upended close to goal. Tony Boyle converted the penalty and Donegal trailed 1-4 to 1-1 at half time.
In the 37th minute Kerry introduced substitute Brian Clarke to their attack. Within 30 seconds he had scored his side's second goal. Goalkeeper Gary Walsh saved John Crowley's initial shot but Clarke was on hand to slot home the rebound.
Tony Boyle (free) and Roper reduced the margin before a forceful run, resulting in a point by James O'Shea, extended Kerry's lead. Donegal's John Gildea, with a massive point from a free fully 60 metres from goal, reduced the margin to four points and when Roper, undoubtedly Donegal's outstanding player, added his third point, there was just one goal between the sides with 13 minutes remaining.
Kerry's response was magnificent. In the next 10 minutes they shot four points without reply through Denis O'Dwyer, Maurice Fitzgerald (free), Crowley and Genie Farrell. Substitute Joe Daly was also making a noticeable contribution.
Donegal finished with a flourish. Peter O'Leary had to make a magnificent smothering save at the feet of Tony Boyle, but Brian McLaughlin had the ball in the net soon afterwards. The same player had a punched effort cleared off the line by Joe Daly before McLaughlin closed the scoring with a point from the last kick of the game.
