Kildare may well have missed out on All-Ireland football glory, but their men's and women's teams are proving the best around in pitch and putt. At the McDonagh club on the Curragh, the Kildare women's team won the Paintworld Ltd, All-Ireland Inter-County championship for the third time in four years, while the men made it a double for the Lilywhites. The women did so in some style winning with a 20-shot margin from second placed Dublin. Two time All-Ireland champion Bernadette Coffey of St Bridget's gave Kildare the best possible start with an 11-under-par 97. The Kildare team - also including Christine Byrne, Tara Dillon, Marian Byrne and Rose Kelly - finished the day on 33 under par, a championship record. It wasn't, however, so easy for the men. Eddie Carey, came to the 36th needing a par to earn Kildare their first inter-county title since 1988. He duly succeeded to give Kildare a slender one-stroke victory over Cork and Westmeath.
