Kildare withdraw motion

GAA: Kildare will be withdrawing motion three from the clár of Saturday's Congress motions list

GAA: Kildare will be withdrawing motion three from the clár of Saturday's Congress motions list. The proposal covers the opening up of Croke Park to other sports.

According to county PRO Syl Merrins, the decision was taken at the behest of the proposing club. "We will be withdrawing it because the Ballyteague club asked us to," he said. "They are actually against Croke Park being used for other games but were afraid that a broader motion on Rule 42 would be passed so they proposed that all grounds except Croke Park should not be used for other sports. In other words they wanted to copperfasten the rule so that the clubs would not be affected."

Asked why it had taken the club until now to see no broader motion had been tabled, Merrins said: "I think people had forgotten about it until now. When the media coverage began to pick up, Ballyteague were anxious that they not be seen to support the relaxing of the rule in relation to Croke Park."
