BOHEMIANS' direct approach, no doubt influenced by a very strong wind, blew Kilkenny City out of the FAI Cup at Dalymount Park last night.
Complacency never came into it as Turlough O'Connor's side took full advantage of the breeze at their backs in the first half, and their 2-0 interval lead meant this second round tie was all but over after 45 minutes.
The long ball from the flanks into the box reaped its rewards in that opening half as Bohemians created nine clear cut chances, with a third goal disallowed. Ashley Stephenson, in the Kilkenny goal, was busy keeping out anything else Bohemians threw at him.
But the inevitable occurred on 22 minutes when Bohemians finally took the lead with a "route one" goal. Donal Broughan's long ball from half way into the box was neatly headed down by Maurice O'Driscoll, and the charging Peter Hanrahan volleyed home from 12 yards for only his second goal of the season. His first was that which beat Kilkenny in a Leinster Cup game back in September.
Bohemians' dominance continued unabated and they got further reward three minutes before the break. Again the angled ball, this time from the left by Tommy Byrne, was flicked on by O'Driscoll and Broughan seized his chance for a rare goal as he ghosted in from the right to score with a stooping header.
Dave Henderson had to make his only real save of the game to deprive Aidan Cooney on 58 minutes, before Bohemians increased their lead nine minutes later. Tommy Byrne's corner caused an almighty scramble in the Kilkenny box as James Coll's header came back off the crossbar, and Hanrahan stabbed home his second goal of the game after Brian Arrigan had handled O'Driscoll's follow up effort on the line.
Tony O'Connor found space to set up Swan, who beat Stephenson with a low drive from the edge of the box, for the fourth goal 11 minutes from time.
