Kilkenny College 18 Wesley College 16: A missed penalty deep in injury time at Naas yesterday cost Wesley College a place in the next round of the Senior Cup.
The losers began brightly with an early try coming from their captain, Robert Green, which was converted by Henry Micks.
Kilkenny struck back, however, with a penalty from John Jenkinson and a try by Robert Connor, which Jenkinson duly converted.
Micks's penalty coming just before the interval left the teams tied on 10 points each at the change of ends.
On the resumption wind-assisted Wesley began brightly with an early Micks penalty but Kilkenny were quick to reply with a fine try by Andrew Handcock, and Jenkinson again converting.
A penalty from Jenkinson from in front of the post left five points between the teams at the three-quarter stage, a gap which narrowed to two points when Micks converted a Wesley penalty.
Try as they might the Wesley were unable to break through for the vital score as Kilkenny College hung on for a well-deserved victory.
