The Gaelic Players Association have avoided some of the controversy that plagued last year's hurling team of the year nominations with the 45 candidates spread across 10 counties.

The selection committee, chaired by former Cork manager Donal O'Grady, choose 13 Cork players to just nine from All-Ireland champions Kilkenny in 2006.

This year the back-to-back champions lead the list with 11 players. Next come All-Ireland and Munster finalists Limerick with 10 nominees, Waterford have nine, Cork six, Tipperary three, Wexford two and there is one each for Clare, Dublin, Laois and Galway.

There are no Clare or Dublin representatives on the All Star list, which was selected by the media. All told, there are six personnel changes.

O'Grady is joined on the GPA committee by Cyril Farrell, Michael Duignan and journalist Diarmuid O'Flynn.

The final selection process is conducted via a postal vote by GPA members who are restricted to picking one player, from just three options, in each position.

In contrast, the All-Star system puts players into six categories: goalkeeper, two defensive blocks, midfield and two forwards blocks to allow greater flexibility of selection. This option is not available in the GPA system.

Munster and National League champions Waterford can only receive a maximum eight selections as Dan Shanahan and Stephen Molumphy are both bracketed at left-wing forward with Kilkenny's Eoin Larkin.

Shanahan is the obvious favourite here having also been short-listed for player of the year along with Kilkenny's Tommy Walsh and Limerick's Ollie Moran. Moran is preferred to All Star nominee Ken McGrath.

Despite a disappointing championship, Tipperary could conceivably have three players included as Declan Fanning, Eamonn Corcoran and Lar Corbett are all nominated.

O'Grady commented: "The hurling committee has chosen what it believes to be the three most deserving players in each position. Now the players have the opportunity to recognise individual ability and endeavour and to acknowledge the premier occupants of the respective on-field positions."

The announcement of the team and player of the year will be made at the Gala awards evening at Dublin's Citywest Hotel on Friday, November 2nd.

The hurler and footballer of the year receive a car from sponsors Opel worth €25,000, while each team member gets €2,500.
