Kilkenny had a comfortable nine-point win over a disappointing Waterford side in the final of the AIB senior hurling tournament at Dungarvan yesterday. A goal from top scorer Denis Byrne, 10 minutes into the second half, when Kilkenny were playing against the wind, put the game beyond Waterford's reach.

It was the home side who had made the better start, pointing twice in the opening five minutes, but Kilkenny were back on level terms within three minutes before they hit a purple patch in the second quarter, scoring seven points without reply in a 10minute period. They led 0-10 to 06 at the break.

Byrne's goal followed good work by substitute Ollie O'Connor. Peter Barry, O'Connor and Byrne, twice, rifled home further points while Dan Shanahan scored two for Waterford.
