A POINT each by Hughie Langan and Seamus Smith right at the end of the game secured the Connacht club football title for Mayo champions Knockmore at Ballina on Saturday.
The game had been a close one all the way through. Clann Na nGael had much more possession in the first half, but shot six wides and led by just two points at half time, 0-3 to 0-1.
Clann went further ahead early in the second half, through an Emmet Durney point, but Knockmore hit back and levelled the game with a Shane Sweeney goal, which was set up by a move involving Padraig Brogan, Peter Cawley and Kevin Staunton.
Brogan added two more points for Knockmore, but they were matched by scores for Clann from Paul McManus and Joey Connaughton, and the scores remained level until the last minutes when the late points by Langan and Smith decided the issue.
. Athenry were three points behind and still managed to force a draw before beating Clarinbridge in extra time in the Galway senior hurling semi final replay at Ballinasloe yesterday.
