Buccaneers 13 Cork Constitution 20: Cork Constitution were more decisive and organised behind the scrum at Dubarry Park, Athlone, on Saturday. The cutting edge was provided by fullback Richard Lane, who scored both their tries.
Lane got the second of his tries in first-half stoppage time to give Constitution a 17-0 lead having played with the strong wind. He ran a perfect line after Frank Cogan had made the hard yards and quick ball through the hands of Darragh Lyons, Conrad O'Sullivan and Conor Quaid set him up for the touchdown in the left corner. It was in that spot he also scored Constitution's opening try after 10 minutes. Cogan blocked down Buccaneers' scrumhalf Mark Bruce and Lane set off from inside his own halfway, exchanging passes with Frank Murphy, before scoring.
Outhalf Darragh Lyons landed both conversions and he added a penalty after 24 minutes from 30 metres. Buccaneers hit back after the restart as Tom Cregan landed a penalty and a drop goal. A superb break by Paddy O'Sullivan ended with Constitution centre Quaid being sin binned and a try for Buccaneers when they opted for a quick penalty and David Quinlan touched down. Cregan added the points but Constitution responded with a penalty from Lyons.
