The Swede has been handed a bumper pay rise and a one-year extension to his current contract. The new contract means the striker, who scored 53 goals this season, will be 32 by the time his new deal expires, when it is likely he will return to his homeland.

Larsson, who scored four goals for Sweden against Moldova on Wednesday, said: "I am delighted to say that I have agreed a one-year extension on my contract with Celtic which will keep me at Parkhead until 2004. I'm very happy that my future is now sorted for the next few years and I will remain at Celtic."

Celtic chief executive Ian McLeod said: "Henrik is unquestionably one of the best players in Europe and this agreement is further evidence of Celtic's intent to sustain its position in Scotland and make progress in Europe."

France beat Brazil 2-1 in the Confederations Cup semi-final in Suwon, South Korea yesterday.
