FAI Cup Replay/Longford Town 1 Waterford United 0: Waterford's Cup jinx against Longford continued in Flancare Park last night as the champions of 2003 and 2004 advanced to the last eight of this year's competition. The Blues have now lost to Longford four times since 2001.
This was a dreadful game of football. However, Alan Mathews and his charges won't be bothered with that assessment. Unlucky Waterford had come much more into this game when Stephen Paisley pounced for his 85th-minute winner.
Longford created the first opening of the game in the sixth minute when Dave Mooney shot across the face of Ben Spicer's goal. However, there was no home player far enough forward to capitalise on the chance.
Waterford rarely foraged into Longford territory before the break while Longford had two further opportunities to break the deadlock.
Kevin Doherty's powerful 29th-minute header was deflected out for a corner but the major talking point of the first half happened in the 31st minute.
Johnny Martin's cross picked out Stephen Paisley inside the six-yard box but the defender somehow contrived to shoot straight at Spicer when it seemed easier to score.
Waterford started the second half in sprightly fashion. Ian Fraher had a good chance on 57 minutes but his effort was just wide of Mick Dempsey's goal.
The game seemed destined for extra-time until Paisley's late late intervention. Alan Kirby's cross fell kindly for the full back who cracked home a shot that crept inside Spicer's left hand post.
